Behind the scenes with Jonas Michanek and ROAR incubator #instatakeover

February 15, 2018News, Startups, WeAreIdeon

Next week Jonas Michanek and the Nigerian incubator ROAR will be taking over our Instagram account. So we took the opportunity to talk with Jonas Michanek the current incubator manager for ROAR incubator.

Jonas Michanek and ROAR Incubator
Jonas Michanek and ROAR Incubator

Hey, Jonas Michanek, can you tell us a bit more about yourself?

I am a serial entrepreneur and writer, that’s how I usually introduce myself in short. I started several companies, couple of NGOs and one foundation. Some of those companies are Idélaboratoriet, Food to happen and NEW, all of them have an innovation consultancy angle. One of the things that I have started that I am most proud of is a NGO called Social Entrepreneurship Forum (SE Forum). By now SE Forum is 15 years old and it’s headquarter is in Stockholm, but it works all over the world with social entrepreneurship. I have also written couple of books. One of them is the Idea Agent, which is a handbook of creative processes, which has been translated into 4-5 languages and is course literature all around Scandinavia. I have written books about entrepreneurship, about creative industry and how to develop creative industry on a regional level in Sweden and Europe.

If we are talking about my background I have a bachelor degree in Film and Literature, but I also have a master in Business Administration. I love sports, culture and business – I eat it all!

What is your assignment in Nigeria?

I am an Incubator Manager and I am going to help to develop the incubator ROAR Nigeria Hub. It has already started, but it is still in a very early phase. I am going to help with the creation of program, process, the organizational structure and make it an integral part of the Nigerian innovation eco system. It already has a great start because it is based in the great university University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN).

Can you tell me more about the people that you are working with and about the incubator?

ROAR has 16 teams working in the incubator. Great guys, everything from agricultural tech (how to make the processing of cassava more efficient), to social media apps (like hairstyles swapping apps), to more socially based tickets sales for events, they also have a team with a drone idea. It’s a bit of a mixture, but most of them are concentrated around high tech.

What are you going to show us next week on the Instatakeover?

I think we will show off the teams and they are going to share what they are doing. If they have some questions about Sweden, we can get an exchange and a conversation going. There is a big conference next week IDEON Science Park: Lunda Vision 1st International Workshop, so we will show some short videos from it as well.

Can you tell us a bit more about the conference and its focus?

It is going to be an innovation conference and it’s the first big conference about innovation and science park development in Nigeria. The Lion Science Park (that ROAR is a part of) will be the university based science park in Nigeria. There is going to be a big Swedish-Nigerian knowledge exchange, because there is about 200-300 people coming.

Do you think it’s important and useful to connect the entrepreneurs from Ideon Science Park and Lion Science Park?

I think that from the Nigerian side there is already a lot of interest to connect, but I also think that there are some companies at Ideon that would be interested in such collaboration. The Nigerian companies want to get more knowledge and understanding about tech and for the Swedish companies I think it’s useful to understand the Nigerian and in parts the African market. So, I think there can be great opportunities and exchanges with such collaboration.

Xenergic – innovative memory for a connected world

February 14, 2018News, Startups, WeAreIdeon

STARTUP NEWS We continue our series of startup companies who are working at Ideon Innovation. The purpose of this series is to introduce the startups to the other companies at Ideon to see if there is a possibility of working together and doing business with each other. Kind of an electronic networking.

Company name: Xenergic

Xenergic team
Xenergic team

Hey, Babak Mohammadi, can you tell us more about the team, who you are and what your background is?

The team at Xenergic, known also as XENTEAM, is an international team of ambitious engineers who share their passion for energy-efficient circuit design for a greener connected society. Our members are Berta, Caty, Julian, Kevin, Lucas, Roshan and Xiao which proudly all together bring together eight nationalities from different parts of World. All of them have a specialization in integrated circuit design.

The SRAM memory developed by Xenergic AB is the result of many years of research and expertise from Lund University in combination with many years of industrial experience. The company is co-founded by me, Joachim Rodrigues, Anders Berglund and Lund University. I hold a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Lund University and have more than ten years of industrial experience. Joachim is Assc. Professor in circuit design at Lund University and has several years of industrial experience. Anders Berglund has a background as a serial tech. entrepreneur.

Can you explain more about your product?

Xenergic AB develops a new IP for on-chip memories, known as SRAM which is a widely used component in integrated digital circuits such as mobile phones’ processors. The developed IP drastically reduces the power consumption and brings down the area footprint and thus production cost, making it very attractive to low power applications such as battery powered devices. Higher energy efficiency is also necessary for the deployment of a sustainable internet of things (IoT), where low-power and low-cost devices are of vital importance. Memories are area and power bottlenecks in most of the digital designs, and nowadays, roughly 70% of a typical digital chip is accounted for memories.

Can you tell me what inspired you to create it? What problem you wanted to fix if any?

We like to compete and to push ourselves to the best of our ability, so our product was developed from a passion to create the best memory. We wanted to achieve something extraordinary, a memory design that would drastically decrease the power and area cost while at the same time delivers a high performance. After many years of hard work we achieved what we were looking for and designed a memory that not only reduced the size but at the same time reduced the power consumption by more than 90%.

Our memory will be crucial for battery powered mobile devices and the deployment of internet of things, where we will enable more functionality and longer battery life time in mobile phones and Internet of Things devices. Today the memory can make up as much as 70% of the surface area and energy cost of the digital designs. We will change this!

What benefits will I as a user get from using your product?

Our IP will extend the battery longevity of mobile devices and enable the development of new low-power devices. Smaller area footprint of IP comes with the advantage of more functions and lower product cost for the end user.

In what way could help other Ideon companies?

We can help high-tech companies to improve the performance of their application, and we are already collaborating with some global players.

Behind the scenes with Bylife #instatakeover

February 8, 2018News, Startups, WeAreIdeon

Next week Bylife, who was the winner at the VentureCup idea hunt 2017, will be taking over our Instagram account. So we took the opportunity to talk with Erik Wilson the CEO and Founder of Bylife.

Erik Wilson - Bylife
Erik Wilson – Bylife

Hi Erik, can you explain a bit more what your company does? What is unique in what you are providing? What inspired you to start your business?

In short – We (Bylife.io) are bringing nature indoors to improve peoples’ quality of life. This means we are developing what we call “a smart living wall” i.e. a bookshelf, covered with green indoor plants that make you feel great from simply being near it. Just like being outside.

What’s unique about our product is that the wall knows what type of plant sits where and how it should be taken care of. In that way you can sit back and enjoy the plants not caring about maintenance, and start thinking about who you are and how you would like to express yourself in life, by life.

What inspired me in creating it? The nature, seeing how good everyone feel in contact with it, and asking myself – how can nature be more accessible and with us in our day to day life. Since we spend 90% of our time indoors, this is where it must be.

Can you tell me more about the people working at Bylife? What backgrounds do you have and what inspires you while working?

Erik Wilson, CEO and founder. Responsible for customer relations, business development and research, while keeping the team together. Worked with light simulation and light design for 8-months during his graduation project in collaboration with Philips Lighting Research. Has also international research experience and a combined master’s in engineering nanoscience, from the engineering faculty, LTH, of Lund University.

Zacharias Holm, Software developer and system architect, co-founder. Responsible for developing software and homepage where the systems are monitored and managed from. Previously co-founded and run his own software consultancy firm. Background in ‘Design and Information systems’, from Lund University.

Markus Karlström, Mechatronic expert and robotic developer, co-founder. Responsible for development of the aeroponic spot irrigation and the robotic growth light. Background in mechatronic from LTH. Recently returned from a 6-month exchange program at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

Oscar Nilsson, Product developer and supply manager. Last year student. Product development, Engineering Mechanics LTH.

Luca Caruso, Business development. 1st  year exchange student from Brazil. Studying industrial engineering.

Petter Andersson, Full-stack developer. 4th year computer engineering student at LTH.

The feedback we get from both customers and potential customers inspires us to continue working and boosts our confidence that we are doing something that will have a large impact on society.

You are part of Venture Lab, what does that give you?

We have been with VentureLab for almost a year now and it is an amazing place to start. Firstly, you realize that you are not on your own and your confidence is boosted by others. You receive valuable tips and contacts from more mature entrepreneurs who usually have a head start compared to you.

What are you going to show us during your Instagram takeover week?

You will get an insight in our daily work-life, hopefully learn something about plants and what easy steps you can take to improve your indoor environment. Also, I will be revealing why we have been working so hard for the past weeks.

Accumbo wants to empower patients with chronic diseases

January 29, 2018News, Startups, WeAreIdeon

STARTUP NEWS We continue our series of startup companies who are working at Ideon Innovation. The purpose of this series is to introduce the startups to the other companies at Ideon to see if there is a possibility of working together and doing business with each other. Kind of an electronic networking.

Company name: Accumbo

Accumbo photo
Accumbo team

Hello Samuel Börjesson, can you tell me more about who are you and what inspired your team to create Accumbo?

The company was founded by a doctor in Kalmar and he had this idea that you can transform the way traditional healthcare works. Especially when it comes to chronic diseases that are really common nowadays, there is a lot that can be done to treat these patients more efficiently. So, we formed our team last summer and we are now developing our product. Our team is divided into two groups where the medical team is situated in Kalmar and I, together with the development team, are situated in Lund. I work as a product owner/marketing person and I try to make sure we develop a product that fits the customer’s needs. In Kalmar we also have a person focusing on the whole health perspective of our product. She is dealing with how our product can help and inspire our users to live a healthier life.

Can you tell us a bit more about your product? What was the inspiration behind creating it?

Our product consists of connected medical devices that will synchronize data with our app, which we of course are trying to make as user friendly as possible. Our founder wanted to have an easier and better solution for people living with chronic diseases. He was looking at it from a broader perspective and saw that a lot of patients do not get the best possible treatment and that this can be done much more efficiently. By letting patients do their own measurements at home with continuous feedback from the doctor, instead of the traditional way which meant that they will go to their doctor once a year for a checkup, the patients will get a better and more precise treatment. He saw a big potential as the healthcare for these patients were not working in the best way possible, and that there were a lot of benefits from digitizing this process. We are focusing on the patients experience and ability to follow up their condition.

What benefits can I, as a user, get from using your product?

We are helping to empower the people with chronic diseases. We are providing them with the right tools to treat their conditions and to be able to follow it up more efficiently. And with the help of our product, users will have a closer connection to their doctor and will be able to get feedback much faster. Instead of going to the hospital or your caretaker once a year you can do it at home and reach your doctor whenever you want to. One of the biggest benefits with this is the ability for both doctor and patient to look at the development of the disease rather than single measurement values.
In this way our users will save time, have higher convenience as well as getting a better treatment. Moreover, we are not only giving the patients the tools, but also the knowledge to better understand their disease and how they can control it.

What kind of help might you need from other Ideon companies or possible collaborations?

Well right now we are hiring and we are looking for Android, iOS and backend developers that will help us with our app and want to be a part of this journey. We have global ambitions and we want to be a part of transforming the healthcare industry. The whole transformation is happening now and it’s not just a trend in Sweden, but it is a global phenomenon.  The European Union has stated that all member states need to focus on the digitization of healthcare as the costs are increasing, the population is getting older and the percentage of chronic diseases is increasing.

We are also interested in collaborations in regards to working with connected devices as this is one of the major aspects in our product.

What can you provide to the Ideon companies?

In the long term, I think that there are a lot on interesting companies at Ideon that are working within healthcare, so I can see a lot of potential collaborations that can emerge from that in making the whole healthcare more digital. Before this stage though we still need to develop and grow more.

Behind the science with JOIN #instatakeover

January 16, 2018News, WeAreIdeon

Next week, JOIN business and technology will be taking over our Instagram account. So we took the opportunity to talk to Pernilla Zetterlund Lind from JOIN. Did you know that JOIN was one of the first companies to move in to the park in 1984?

Pernilla Zetterlund Lind
Pernilla Zetterlund Lind – JOIN

Hey, Pernilla can you tell us a bit more about JOIN and what you do?

– We are a company that helps other companies to make their product so that it can go for production and hence sale. So, it is mostly products that are strongly tech or medical related. People come here with an idea and ask us if the product they want to make is even possible.  We try to make that product work by making a prototype of that. Hopefully if it works they can start manufacturing the product and sell it.

Do you help them just with the prototype or also with the steps after that (like finding an investor)?

– We can help them a bit, we mostly focus on helping them design and make their product. Of course we have already formed different business relationships, so we can help them to get in contact with different people that can further help them. If we do not have the exact contacts we can at least tell them where they should go and who would be able to help them out the most.

Who are the people that work here?

– Most of us are different types of engineers. Technical, mechanical, electronics, we have also a lot of computer engineers. Our whole idea is that we have people for everything for designing the product, creating the program for it, and then we have 3D printers that can create the prototype. We have people in order to do the whole process of getting your product from an idea stage to a working product (production) stage.

What are you going to show us next week on Instagram?

– On Thursday, we host a breakfast meeting with companies from Ideon Science Park in order to make new connections and form new business relationships.  We also want to use this as a chance to show who we are and what we can offer. We will finish the week by sharing our experience from the meeting. What happened, how was it, what did we learn.

April 21, 2017News, WeAreIdeon

With 400 companies at Ideon, it is difficult to keep track of what everyone is doing. We want to make it easier for all of us to get to know one another by inviting you behind the scenes. Every other week, one company will take over our Instagram account and share their working life with you. BrainLit are hosting our account this week.

Hello Cathrin Frisemo, what can you tell me about BrainLit?

Cathrin Frisemo BrainLit
Cathrin Frisemo, BrainLit

– BrainLit is Sweden’s most innovative lighting technology company. The intelligent light control system was developed and patented by the tech serial entrepreneur Tord Wingren in 2012.

– We are gaining both national and international recognition, e.g. we were one of the finalists at the Swedish Mobile Awards, and internationally also for BrainLit’s light installation at Lindeborgsskolan in Malmö.
