Last week, Sweden Dynamics officially inaugurated its new Urban Drone Lab in Malmö’s historic Tobacco Factory building. Sweden’s Minister for Defense, Pål Jonson, cut the ribbon together with Sweden Dynamics CEO Sebastian Merlöv and had the opportunity to test-fly a drone. Representatives from the defense sector, industry, and the Amyna team attended the event.
The inauguration marks another important step in the development of Swedish defense innovation and national capabilities in drone technology – a field evolving rapidly and playing an increasingly vital role in modern defense.
From Soldiers’ Challenges to National Capability
During the event, the team shared the story behind Sweden Dynamics. Founded by individuals with backgrounds in the Swedish Armed Forces, Martin and Sebastian, the company emerged from a desire to solve real operational challenges faced by soldiers in the field.
When we identified a military problem, we refused to accept that it could not be solved,” the team explains.
Together with co-founder Martin Helmersson, he has built the company from the ground up. Far from Sweden’s traditional startup scene in Stockholm, the team has moved quickly and chosen to develop much of its capability in-house.
The new drone lab brings development, production, and training together under one roof. Here, the company develops both hardware and software while providing an environment for testing, training, and operational preparation.

Developing Technology Close to the End User
The rapid pace of drone innovation creates new challenges for both defense organizations and industry. Unlike many traditional defense systems, drones can become obsolete quickly, making long-term procurement planning difficult.
Sweden Dynamics therefore emphasized the importance of maintaining development and production capabilities within Sweden, close to both users and operational needs.
The company’s ambition extends beyond developing drones. It also seeks to contribute to the broader discussion about how emerging technologies are transforming military tactics and operational realities.
Innovation that Strengthens Sweden’s Defense
In his remarks, Minister for Defense Pål Jonson highlighted the importance of innovation in strengthening Sweden’s defense capabilities.
Innovation is about solving problems,” Jonson said, emphasizing the importance of decentralized capabilities and the role of emerging technologies within Sweden’s defense strategy.
He also expressed his appreciation for Sweden Dynamics and other innovative companies contributing to Sweden’s defense capability and innovation ecosystem.
Malmö as a Hub for Future Defense Innovation
Malmö City Council Chair Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh welcomed Sweden Dynamics to the city and highlighted the significance of the company’s investment.
The new drone lab will not only strengthen Sweden’s defense capabilities but also create new jobs and reinforce Malmö’s position as a center for innovation, societal resilience, and security.
Through initiatives like this, we build both capability and a stronger society,” Stjernfeldt Jammeh noted.
With the opening of its Urban Drone Lab, Sweden Dynamics takes another step towards its ambition of developing technology, expertise, and operational capability in Sweden, helping meet the security challenges of tomorrow.
