Today, 24 September, nine E-Prize finalists will pitch their innovations live from Nasdaq at 13:00. Among them are two Ideon-based companies: Solstice and Re:notch.
Now in its 18th year, E-Prize recognizes innovations that can help drive the energy transition. This year’s finalists offer solutions ranging from increased hydropower generation to smarter energy use and long-term storage.
Solstice and Re:notch are both finalists in the Smarter Energy Use category. Both work with solar energy storage, but in different ways:
Solstice is developing a way to supply industry with fossil-free process heat at temperatures of up to 1,000°C. Its technology stores concentrated solar heat in sand, providing heat without adding to demand on the electricity grid.
Re:notch is developing seasonal energy storage for commercial buildings. Its system converts surplus solar electricity generated in summer into heat, which is stored underground for use during winter. Seasonal storage addresses a challenge in the energy transition: solar energy is abundant in summer, while demand for heating is greatest in winter.
