LRIX – Where Military Needs Meet New Solutions

LRIX, Lund Rapid Innovation & eXploitation, is a meeting place where companies can engage with needs identified by the Swedish Armed Forces and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) – and contribute technology, expertise and new solutions.

The aim is to create better conditions for early dialogue between defence, industry, academia and the innovation ecosystem, enabling solutions to be tested, adapted and developed faster in response to real military needs.

Amyna at Ideon Science Park is the operator of LRIX, working in close collaboration with the LRIX partners to connect military needs with relevant companies, technologies and innovation capabilities.

What is LRIX?

LRIX is carried out by the Swedish Armed Forces Cyber Defence, the Swedish Army Staff, the South Scanian Regiment (P 7) and FMV, with support from organisations including the Swedish Defence University, Lund University Faculty of Engineering (LTH), the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) and Vinnova.

The initiative explores new ways of bringing together military needs, technology, users and companies earlier in the development process. Through dialogue, procurement, testing and demonstrations, solutions can be developed and adapted based on real operational and tactical needs.

LRIX is also an initiative for developing new methods and ways of working. Lessons from the pilot will contribute to future approaches for faster innovation, collaboration and acquisition within defence.

Who can participate?

LRIX is open to companies with technologies, solutions or expertise that can contribute to solving identified military needs.

You do not need to be an established defence company. LRIX also aims to engage companies from the civilian market whose technologies could be applied or adapted for military use.

Companies can contribute a complete solution or collaborate with others to combine complementary technologies and capabilities.

From Need to Tested Solution

LRIX works with concrete use cases based on needs identified by the Swedish Armed Forces. These describe a challenge or required capability – rather than prescribing a finished technical solution.

This creates room for companies to propose different technologies and approaches.

The process can include:

  • market dialogue and Requests for Information (RFI)
  • procurement
  • testing and verification
  • demonstration in relevant environments
  • further development based on results and user feedback

The objective is to create shorter, more continuous pathways between military needs, innovation, testing and operational use.

Current Use Case: GNSS in Contested Environments

One current use case addresses how military units can maintain positioning, navigation and orientation when GNSS/GPS signals are disrupted, manipulated or unavailable.

LRIX is looking for solutions that enable users, vehicles and systems to determine their position, navigate effectively, share relevant information and maintain situational awareness in electromagnetically contested environments.

Information about current RFIs and procurements is published through FMV’s supplier portal, Kommers Annons.

Surface Surveillance – From Sensor to Command and Control

LRIX’s first procurement focuses on surface surveillance and the complete chain from sensors to command-and-control systems.

The objective is to establish a sensor-based surveillance capability that can operate in field conditions with limited infrastructure. Sensor events should be collected, filtered and prioritised, and transformed into information that is operationally useful in the environment where personnel work.

The process follows an MVP-based approach (Minimum Viable Product), where solutions are initially tested on a limited scale and can subsequently be developed and adapted based on results and user feedback.

Could Your Technology Be Part of the Solution?

LRIX welcomes both established defence suppliers and new companies with relevant technologies and expertise. Collaboration between companies with complementary solutions is encouraged.
