LifeFinder: Sensor Saving Lives in Extreme Environments

December 16, 2024

elegant sensor Imagine a situation where you’re cut off from the outside world. Your phone doesn’t work. The technology you carry can’t help you. Whether you’re at sea, deep in the wilderness, or on a remote mountain, your rescue depends on someone knowing where you are. You are perhaps working as a firefighter or have another challenging job.

From Sensors to Life-Saving Technology

Enter LifeFinder, a technology, built to overcome extreme conditions. LifeFinder can operate where other tech typically cannot reach – provided that the customer has an infrastructure and receiver in place to handle alarms – and take action. It is is a ground-breaking technology deriving from Sensative’s sensor. One simple question sparked a new direction: could this technology also be used to save lives?

The founders soon found a unique way to leverage Sensative’s IoT platform for life-saving purposes, transforming it into a powerful safety tool.

Anders Schening, with a background in economics, engineering, and startups, joined the project in 2019. He brought insights into brand-building, marketing, and the synergy between sales and technology.

– LifeFinder began as an idea to use our sensor system to save lives,” says Anders. Initially, the team explored the possibility of preventing drowning accidents, but soon realized the technology’s potential applications in other high-risk environments.

LifeFinder – Your Digital Guardian Angel in the Toughest Environments

LifeFinder is more than a technological solution; it’s a digital guardian angel. It is designed to operate in places where traditional technology fails, such as dense forests, open oceans, and polar regions.

– Our sensors act as a sixth sense, ready to alert rescue teams in case of emergencies,” says Anders. LifeFinder monitors factors like movement, temperature, and position, allowing it to respond instantly in an emergency.

For example, consider a lethal situation for a firefighter. If a firefighter is not moving, it indicates a serious situation, potentially signaling that they have been incapacitated. In such critical moments, the LifeFinder sensor would detect the lack of movement and send an immediate alert, allowing for rapid response and intervention.

– Our focus is on 85% of the Earth’s surface where our customers operate without mobile coverage, such as at sea, in forests, and other remote locations, Anders explains

Our technology is also particularly well-suited for complex environments, such as ships with significant amounts of steel, where solutions like WiFi and Bluetooth do not perform optimally. In other words, we are not focused on traditional “office environments” but rather on more challenging and specialized use cases”

The LifeFinder sensors are also built to look great.

– Design is important,” Anders adds, noting how the devices are crafted to be small, sleek, and durable, so they integrate seamlessly into everyday workwear or equipment.

These sensors are energy-efficient, with a five-year battery life, and can function in areas without standard connectivity. This makes LifeFinder ideal for isolated locations, like oil rigs, mountain ranges, and remote maritime areas.

Safe and Effective Rescue Operations

LifeFinder integrates with existing alarm systems and is tailored to meet specific industry needs, making it ideal for a wide range of professions – from seafarers to researchers. Every configuration is optimized so the right people receive alerts when an emergency arises. LifeFinder works closely with partners like Lloyd’s Register Safety Tech Accelerator for Enhancing Safety and shipowners like Wallenius Wilhelmsen to ensure LifeFinder is adapted to the realities of each unique environment.

– It’s an entire safety ecosystem,” says Anders.

In the face of extreme environments and remote locations, LifeFinder makes a critical difference, enabling safe rescue operations for those in need.

The Future of LifeFinder and Safety Technology

LifeFinder is leading a new era in safety technology that saves lives and redefines safety standards. The focus on design, scalability, and adaptability ensures that LifeFinder will continue expanding to more areas and use cases.

LifeFinder proves that, with the right technology, one can be safe even in the most challenging conditions – when and where it is needed the most.

How it works

  • LifeFinder is a life-saving device
  • It uses advanced sensors and a low-power, long-range network to detect and alert for emergencies in the most isolated environments.
  • The system monitors movement, temperature, water exposure, and positioning, helping to detect potential life-threatening situations for people in high-risk roles, like firefighters or offshore workers.
  • Through real-time data analysis, it can distinguish unusual patterns, such as lack of movement in extreme heat, which might indicate a user is incapacitated and in need of urgent help.
  • When a dangerous situation is detected, LifeFinder immediately sends alerts tailored to the needs of the environment, directing notifications to emergency contacts or designated response teams.
  • Operating efficiently without recharging for up to five years, LifeFinder is durable, compact, and can be integrated into existing safety gear, making it easy to carry and reliable in extreme conditions.
