Thinking of applying to NATO DIANA? Start preparing early

October 19, 2026

Have you developed technology that could solve a defence or security challenge? NATO DIANA can help you develop and test your solution, connect with end users, and understand the route into the defence market. A strong application shows how your innovation can make a practical difference and what you need to take the next step.

Find the need behind the challenge

Start by understanding the challenge you want to address. Who needs your solution, in what situation, and why? How does it improve on the way the problem is handled today? The more clearly you connect your technology to a real need, the easier it will be for evaluators to understand its relevance. Choose the use case that offers the strongest fit with the challenge.

Show what you can do

Gather evidence of what your technology can deliver. Test results, pilot projects, customer references, and measurable outcomes build credibility. If you already have civilian customers, their experience can be valuable. Explain what transfers to a defence setting and what needs further adaptation or testing. Be clear about the difference between what you have demonstrated and what you still need to explore.

Aim for your next milestone

Think about why DIANA is right for you now. What specific milestone do you want to reach? This might mean testing in a relevant environment, getting feedback from military users, or understanding how your solution could integrate with existing systems. Explain how the programme’s resources can help you move forward.

Get your team ready for the journey

Check the formal requirements early, including those relating to company registration, location, ownership and control. Make sure you also have the time and capacity to participate. Who will lead the work, who will handle technical development, and how will the programme fit alongside your other commitments?

Make the numbers work

Build a realistic plan for activities, costs and outcomes. DIANA provides contractual funding, with deliverables and reporting requirements. Participation can create valuable opportunities, but it does not guarantee future customer contracts. You will also need a plan to fund your business beyond the programme.

Make your strengths easy to see

Avoid simply reusing your investor pitch. Your application needs to respond clearly to the specific challenge. Use plain language, back up your claims and be open about what still needs development. Ask someone outside your team to read it and explain back to you what problem you solve and why your solution matters.

Give yourself a head start

When the next call opens, read the current terms, use the correct templates, and start working in the portal early. Pay particular attention to the eligibility and technology maturity requirements for that specific call.
