This morning at the Tech Hub Breakfast at Ideon Science Park, we had the pleasure of hearing Jan Karlsson from Secure State Cyber share lessons learned from supporting 15 companies across four Swedish science parks through the Sweden Secure Tech Hub initiative.
One message stood out clearly:
Protect your IP from day one.
For many startups, the focus is naturally on building the MVP, finding customers, and growing the business. But cybersecurity, documentation, and protection of intellectual property are becoming critical business enablers, not just technical considerations.
Some of the key takeaways:
- Understand your market and the regulations that apply to your industry.
- Choose an established cybersecurity framework instead of creating your own.
- Documentation is essential. Customers, partners, auditors, and investors increasingly expect proof of how you manage security.
- Be prepared for audits and due diligence processes early.
- Think about your supply chain security. Your customers will ask questions—and you need to be ready with answers.
- Take a risk-based approach and start early. Certification can take anywhere from 6 to 18 months.
As regulations such as NIS2 and the Cyber Resilience Act continue to reshape the landscape, cybersecurity is becoming a competitive advantage as much as a compliance requirement.
The value of your company is not only in the product you build, but also in how well you protect it.
Thank you, Jan Karlsson and Secure State Cyber, for sharing your insights and practical advice.
